Dog Friendly Winter Cabin Rentals in NY

One of the treasures of Winter at Wellnesste Lodge and Cabin Rentals is having friendly dogs of all shapes and sizes around. So many guests come to visit our cozy cabins from all over the Northeast and bring their puppies to goof off in the great outdoors.

There's a certain thrill and satisfaction in seeing our furry friends frolic in the fresh powdery snow! Whether it's going out for a hike, doing some snow tubing, wandering the woods for a snowshoe adventure or strapping on cross-country skis, our lodging guests always seem to find winter fun. Their pets are always close by, including snuggling in their cabin after a day's long adventure :-) Photo: Ottie enjoying the snow during a snowshoe hike with Christophe

Alpine (Downhill) Skiing in CNY in March

For much of the United States, March is a time for Cherry Blossoms, tulips and the launch of spring. For the hearty souls who live in or visit Upstate NY, March is also the month for late winter skiing.

The warmer March temps (averaging in the mid 30’s to mid 40’s) and heavy base snows of the past four months make skiing a pleasant adventure for the entire family. In addition to warmer temperatures, March usually brings in a few good late season storms to add to the snow pack. For example, just this past week our area of Central New York received 18” of new lake effect goodness- delivered as an equal opportunity for skiers and snowboarders alike!

Being that March is considered “latter season” for downhill adventures, you can also find some great discount deals on lodging and ski lift tickets. Many area resorts have specials from week to week so it’s always good to contact them a few days before you plan to come up & ask about the latest conditions and ski package discounts.

Two of our personal favorite Central New York downhill ski resorts are Snow Ridge and Woods Valley. Our family and many of our guests love the convenience and family-friendly atmosphere of these two local gems. With hills from beginner to expert, they offer a nice variety of skiing challenges for all age groups and skill levels. Both resorts are so kid-friendly that the local schools even use them for their school ski clubs. Our cabins are just a short drive (20-40 min) from these ski hills so a day trip of skiing followed by a rendezvous at your Wellnesste Cabin where you can gather with your friends and family for a hearty meal & a board game is always in the cards.

So… don’t be content with sitting on the couch for the month of March. Get outdoors and enjoy some fun late winter downhill skiing in beautiful Upstate New York. And of course, if you need a place to stay- “we’ve got a cabin waitin’ for ya.”

Quality Time: Cross-country Skiing with Your Loved One.

My wife Karen and I have been married for 17+ years. With two beautiful girls, 3 dogs, 2 cats, fish, gerbils, 60 acres, our Wellnesste Lodge business and “real jobs” it’s often difficult for us to spend much quality time alone. That being said, one of our favorite winter “dates” over the years has been to steal away for an hour or two and quietly glide through the woods of Upstate New York. From the Adirondacks to the Tug Hill and beyond, we’ve been fortunate to be able to build beautiful memories Cross-country Skiing together.

We’re novices and we stick to novice and intermediate trails while exploring at a steady (but not grueling pace). Our essential gear? We typically pack the camera, some water and a few Clementine’s (our favorite winter fruit from Spain).

This past Saturday, we enjoyed a XC Ski tour of Forest Park in Camden, NY for the first time. This public park is a little treasure with mature forests and a groomed series of trails that meander aside Fish Creek & Mad River. The new fallen snow on the Eastern Hemlocks and Pines along with the babbling of the brooks and rivers in the park were perfect companions on our adventure. We slid along breathing the sweet fresh air. For over an hour we talked, laughed, looked around in silence and recalled other such adventures that we’ve enjoyed in the USA and in Norway dating back over the past two decades or so. It was a peaceful adventure as a couple and the type of “quality time” that all couples can benefit from. The energy of the outdoors, the crisp fresh Central New York air, the bright Vitamin-D evoking sunshine, the chatter of curious Chickadees… all important ties that bind us closer as people and as husband and wife.

So… the next time that you’re looking to have some quality time with your loved one, consider getting outdoors on a pair of cross-country skis and enjoying the rejuvenating essence of Upstate New York together. You’ll be delighted that you did.
